Hundreds of United Way “Day of Action” Volunteers Make an Impact in Williamson County

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas, September 24, 2008 – Hundreds of volunteers participated in the September 19 and 20th Day of Action in Williamson County. United Way of Williamson County partnered with the Round Rock Volunteer Center and several local non-profit organizations – the third such event in 2008. Unique to this Day of Action was the opportunity for businesses and individuals to participate in either onsite or offsite volunteer projects. Offsite projects offered volunteers the opportunity to complete their projects at the home or office, while onsite projects took place at the nonprofit agency’s location.

Offsite projects were conducted for the Williamson County Breast Cancer Resource Center, Hope Alliance and the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center. Nearly 200 volunteers from Seton Williamson, Dell and the Ohio State University Club of Austin put together UV bracelets for cancer patients of the Breast Cancer Resource Center. At the same time, collection drives were held at several businesses to help Hope Alliance and the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Several businesses and individuals took time off on September 19 and 20th from their regular work to paint, fix or organize at several non-profits. The employees from Simple Power sorted, inventoried and organized the donations to the transitional housing program at Hope Alliance.

“We believe it is important to be involved at every level with our partner communities and even more so in Round Rock, as it is in our backyard,” said Mike Elhaj of Simple Power. “Giving back to those in need is a great way to get integrated in the community. The feeling of accomplishment our Simple Power team gets is also a really nice bonus.”

Teams from Dell painted offices at The Georgetown Project and LifeSteps while another group of volunteers did some repair work and cleaning at Samaritan Health Ministries.

“The people that work and live in Williamson County are extremely generous,” said Jennifer A. Edwards, Chief Professional Officer of United Way of Williamson County. “The collective effort of all these volunteers has made a remarkable impact for so many in our community. This truly demonstrates our belief that when we reach out a hand to one, we can influence the condition of all.”
